An open trip shares the boat with other travelers who booked individually — cheaper per person, fixed departure dates, and you'll share common areas and possibly a cabin type with strangers. A private charter reserves the entire boat for your own group, with flexible dates and itinerary, at a higher total cost split among your group.
Yes — nearly every multi-day Phinisi itinerary includes a guided trek on Komodo Island or Rinca Island, where rangers lead you to areas dragons are reliably found (near ranger stations and known nesting/feeding spots). Sightings on these treks are extremely common, though dragons are wild animals and exact numbers vary by visit.
Yes, in almost all package pricing. The park entrance ticket, conservation fee, and per-island guide fee are collected locally by park authorities and are usually excluded from the boat price — this is standard across nearly every operator, not specific to one boat. Budget roughly IDR 300,000–450,000 per person depending on which islands are visited.
Most Phinisi boats offer several tiers on the same trip: shared/dorm cabins with bunk or single beds (cheapest), standard double cabins, and deluxe or master cabins with a private balcony and en-suite bathroom (priciest). Higher decks generally cost more and get better airflow and views; lower-deck cabins are quieter and more stable in swell. April to October (dry season) has the calmest seas, clearest water for snorkeling, and the most reliable weather. Peak demand — and highest prices — fall in July, August, and around New Year, so book 1–3 months ahead for those windows. November to March (wet season) sees fewer crowds and lower prices, but rougher seas can occasionally affect the itinerary.
Basic snorkeling gear (mask, snorkel, fins) is included on virtually every Phinisi package — no diving certification is needed for snorkeling stops like Pink Beach or Manta Point, and crew or guides are on hand to assist weaker swimmers with a life vest. Scuba diving is a separate add-on that does require certification (or a supervised introductory dive) and is usually booked directly with a dive operator in Labuan Bajo.
